“Widgery Road

1.INT: DAYTIME:FRONT ROOM.

ISAAC, a well presented, nervous 20 year old mildly successful chef, PETER, a disorganised, unkept bearded 20 year old and ANDREW a smart arrogant imposing reposessor are sat in the front room all on their phones with the football on in the background.

ISAAC

still looking at his phone

It’s my Sister’s wedding in Cyprus today. It’s a shame I couldn’t go.

PETER

looks up and takes a sip of his beer.

How come you didn’t?

ISAAC

I live with three other people and I work full time in a kitchen. I don’t have the money to go abroad for a fancy wedding.

Andrew

I don’t see why it is such a big deal you couldn’t make it to the wedding anyway. Just because it’s family doesn’t mean that you have to go. Even if you’re invited. I know I wouldn’t. You probably made the right decision because this way you can avoid your family.

ISAAC

Well some of us actually love and care about our family and aren’t dead inside, Andrew.

Andrew

Well some of us literally don’t care about anything you say, Isaac.

Isaac *puts his phone down and looks up and starts to speak but speaks quietly*

I will have you kno…

Andrew

Isaac I’m not even listening.

*Isaac glares at him but does not say anything. The room goes back into silence as Isaac picks up his phone again and Peter sips his beer*

*then suddenly Sebastian walks into the room. Rabbling to himself and changes the channel on the TV to the news*

*news intro*

Good afternoon Britain welcome to the six o’clock news, first we look at someone who robbed the SafeNet bank on Exeter high street in Devon we go to Dave Mathews on the scene. Dave…

*Goes to live filming outside of the bank.*

Dave

Earlier today at round 3 o’clock a man wearing a suit and a top hat demanded money at gunpoint. He then took off with an undisclosed amount of cash disappearing through the crowds and headed towards the cathedral.

Right now police are interviewing witnesses to see what they saw and The K9 units have been deployed but the man has not been caught yet. The man is 6ft, white and a slim build.

So please if you see a man with these features and clothes let the police know as soon as possible.

*cuts back to the four sitting and staring at the tv*

Peter

Well I’ll be a bitch.

*sips drink*

Isaac

I can’t believe anyone would do something like this…

Sebastian

Who even needs money anyway? I let my aunt Deb pay my part of the rent.

*everyone looks at Seb confused*

Peter

You don’t have an aunt Deb.

Andrew

Who cares what made up family member pays your rent? I think that this is a great idea.

Isaac

What? Robbing a bank?

Andrew

Yeah, there is literally nothing that could go wrong.

Peter

*says under breath drunkly*

Think you’ll find lad there’s plenty that could go wrong.

Andrew

I personally disagree. We all bring something to the table that could help us. Whether it is my genus, or Jennies attention to detail, or Peters determination. Now Seb there’s a few people you could bring to help us.

Peter

What would be our cut?

Andrew

I dunno dipshit we haven’t robbed the place yet.

Isaac

I don’t know about this one guys.. this isn’t a very good idea. Plus Think about how dirty the money will be.

*Andrew walks up to Isaac and puts his arm around her.*

Andrew

Come on Isaac? We will only take the cleanest of 50’s. You could probably wipe your ass with them.

Isaac *almost whispering*

Why would anyone do that?

Andrew

Come on now Isaac don’t be silly. You know we will take care of you. And you can help us too jenny. Come on,dude, please?

If it means you’ll do it I will give you another 10% of my cut. So you’ll get even more money when we are done. You said you wanted to go to that wedding, you might make it to the next one with this money.

Issac

I still don’t know about this..

Andrew

But you will help?

Jenny

N..

Andrew

Great! That’s just great. We will need to properly plan this out and I think we all know I will make the best leader. So that’s sorted.

Peter

I want to be leader.

Andrew

How pissed are you right now?

Peter

This is my first drink today.

Andrew

Bullshit. Earlier on I saw you pouring and drinking vodka out of a Listerine bottle. It was at ten in the morning.

Peter

I can’t even clean my teeth in piece in this place.

Andrew

Guys that doesn’t even matter right now. Let’s rob a bank.

INTRO MUSIC

2. INT; DAYTIME, IN THE DINNING ROOM

*close up shot of the table and you see a piece of paper is placed down.*

Andrew

Right I have a list of things that we need to get before we can get our money.

*everyone looks at the list but jenny doesn’t look as closely as the others and stands back slightly.*

Sebastian *reading the piece of paper*

Blue prints for bank

Getaway car

Outfits/disguises…

Andrew

Now I say we split up into teams in order to get this stuff.

First Isaac and I will checking out the bank

While Seb and Pe..Peter are you listening?

Peter

*Peter is stood there downing a drink and when he is finished he smashed his can down on the table and burps*

Ahh, yeah something about a bank or whatever…

Andrew

Don’t make me hit you.

Right you two. You and Seb. Will be buying the car and the outfits.

Peter

What sort of an outfit do we want?

*Andrew and Seb at the same time*

Andrew

Suits

Sebastian

A horse riding costume.

Andrew

No. if you get one of those I’ll kill you myself. You have no idea how out of place you will look.

Sebastian

Yeah but you will look cool.

Andrew

That is literally the last thing you will look.

Peter

I think you’ll look pretty cool

Andrew

Shut up.

*the whole room goes silent and everyone looks around awkwardly. Peter cracks another beer*

Andrew *under his breath*

For fuck sake

Listen. Just get suits. There is no need for anything ridiculous, like a horse costume or morph suits or anything like that.

Sebastian

Yep, Okay

Andrew

Suits.

Sebastian

Suits.

3. INT; DAYTIME, SAFENET BANK

*sat outside the bankers office*

Isaac

I’m telling you Andrew, if we are going to rob a bank, it probably isn’t a good idea to rob the same bank, like, a day later.

Andrew

No isaac. It’s dead smart. The last thing they would expect is another robbery.

Isaac

Yeah but the security will be twice as tight.

Andrew *whispering*

Just shut up and let me do the talking

*A middle Age women walks out of the office they are sat outside of*

Women

Come in

*Andrew and Isaac walk in and sit down*

Women

Hello, I understand you are here to take out a mortgage? How much would you want to take out?

Andrew

Actually i have a few questions for you.

Women

…Sure, what would you like to know about taking out a mortgage?

Andrew

Well it’s not so much that, I just have a few questions about the building.

Women *looking confused.*

Okay..Sure, what would you like to know..?

Andrew

First question, how many rooms are there?

Women

I don’t know, why do you need to know that?

Andrew

Well, we are actually the decorators of the bank.

Women

I thought you were here to take out a mortgage?

Andrew

oh, no, no you must have us confused with someone else.

Women

no.. it says here you are here to take out a mortgage, why are you telling me differently?

Andrew

Pfft…I dunno what to tell you. I just need to know about which rooms need decorating, like the vault for example.

Women

Why would a vault need painting?

Andrew

Well We could take the money out before we paint?

Women *sounding very confused*

After our recent robbery I must tell you that you will not be needed to paint the vault.

Andrew

Well, that is a shame because i feel the vault would look nice, with you know, A nice touch of paint, maybe a rug. don’t you think?

Women

Well it’s a vault so it doesn’t really need to look nice as it isn’t open to the general public.

Andrew

Hmm, understandable but you should keep that in mind

Women

I hope you know that i have nothing to do with the interior of the bank, if you want to talk about that, you need to talk to the manager.

Andrew

I have already spoken to him about this and he said to speak to you.

Women

The manager is a women…

Andrew

Oh… so you can’t tell me anything about the interior about the bank?

Women

No…

Andrew

Oh..

*andrew slowly stands up and Isaac, slowly follows. while they all make awkward eye contact at each other*

4. INT; DAYTIME, INSIDE A FNACY DRESS SHOP

*shot of Seb and Peter looking around the shop at different pieces of clothing. *

Peter

I don’t understand why Andrew wants us to get suits so badly. Everyone robs banks in suits, why not make it interesting and rob the bank in like a gimp suit or something?

*seb turns around and looks looks at Peter as if to say *what the fuck dude*

Peter

Okay maybe not a gimp suit but you see what i mean right?

Sebastian

Andrew said suits so we should probably get suits

Peter

Nah, fuck him, I say we get what we want.

Sebastian

like a banana suit?

Peter

I was thinking like a superhero costume or something..

*Then peter gets a phone call and its andrew he answers the phone*

Peter

Hello?

Andrew

Hey man, how you getting on? you got the suits yet?

Peter

Yeah doing it as we speak. what sort of thing did you want for Isaac?

Andrew

Yeah thats the issue, she’s trying to sit this one out. the only reason he is going along with it is because she thinks that he’s getting more money to go and see her family..

*there is a slight awkward silence*

Peter

He thinks? So you’re not giving him that ten percent?

Andrew

of course not. Look man, we all know we are the brains behind this operation and if anything, we should get the biggest cut, am i right?

*Peter smiles as Andrew says this.*

Peter

Yeah man defiantly. we don’t even need the other two. Isaac is probably washing her hands after touching a door handle as we speak.

*andrew turns around and looks at Isaac and she is reapplying hand sanitiser once again after touching her phone*

*andrew turns back around*

Andrew

you have no idea.

Right just don’t get him anything i don’t really care what she wears.

Peter

Good point. He will look like shit either way.

Andrew

Thats what i figured. Don’t forget you two need to buy the car.

Peter

Yeah we have spoken to someone about that already. We are meeting him at lunchtime.

Andrew

Alright good. see you back at the house later then.

*The phone call ends and Peter turns to Sebastian*

Peter

Dude i just got off the phone with Andrew and he says we are cutting Isaac out.

Sebastian

What why?

Peter

Because he is a cold hearted son of a bitch and i’ve had it up to here with his bossiness. I say me you and Isaac cut him out! it’s not like he is doing anything other than tell us what to do anyway. and we all know we are the smartest ones here and the real brains behind all this.

Sebastian

Yeah thats a good point. I feel like we would do a lot better if we had nobody telling us what to do.

Peter

yeah, we would let our creativity flourish! and i feel like i am most creative when i’m drunk so lets go and get a beer, buy these costumes and then we will go home.

*They exchange a nod and a high-five then walk out of the store without paying.*

5. EXT; CAR-PARK, DAYTIME

Peter and Seb standing outside in a car-park as they wait for the cars salesmen to arrive

Seb

Are you sure about this car, man? why don’t you want like a van or something?

Peter

Nah man, we just need a normal car. we just need a car which won’t raise suspicion where we can get away easily.

*A sliver Ford Fiesta pulls up and BENJ, a small long haired teenager steps out and Seb and Peter walk towards him*

Benj

Suh dudes?

Seb *offering out his hand to shake it*

hey man, seb

*they shake hands and Peter introduces himself and does the same*

Peter

So what we looking at here?

Benj

Well it’s the 2007 model and its got quite low mil..

Peter

Great, great. how much do you want for it?

Benj

Well Like i said in the advert, i think around £1,500 is fair?

Peter

I dunno about that dude. that seems a bit pushy.

How about a test drive? because the outside does seem okay but i want to see how well it runs.

Benj

yeah seems fair. I will drive us to somewhere where you can drive then.

*they all then get in the car*

*seb turns to Peter*

Seb

It smells like weed in this car…

*scene cuts to field where you can see the car pulling in.*

Benj

Alright, do you want to test this bitch out?

Peter

Yeah sure man

*they swap seats and Peter goes to drive but instantly stalls*

Seb

Dipshit

Peter

Shut up fuck face. why don’t you try driving after four pints?

Benj

Wait you’ve been drinking?

*peter looks at benj in the front seat next to him.*

Peter

No, of course not… I don’t drink…

*there is an awkward silence as peter restarts the car and starts to drive*

Peter

It seems to run quite nicely

Benj

Yeah?

Peter

yeah dude i like it. I still don’t feel like it is worth £1.500 but i’m willing to talk about a fair price

Benj

Well it feel like £1.500 is more than fair, however i will bring it down to £1,400?

Peter

How about this, Bring it down to £1,300 and you can keep the carpets on the floor, because i don’t want these.

Benj

Why would i want to keep the carpets if i was selling the car you moron

Peter

Alright man chill out! you can keep the head rests too if you really want.

Benj

What the fuck are you talking about, man?

Look it’s £1.500 or im keeping the car.

Peter

Alright fine! here you go you stingy mother-fucker

*peter pulls out an envlope of what appears to be cash inside and throws it out the window*

Peter

there you go, BUDDY!

*benj then glares at him and gets out the car and as he does that Peter drives off. then Benj opens up the envlope to see fake money inside and on the note he pulls out it says:*

cheers for the free car fuck face.

  1. INT; DINNING ROOM, DAYTIME

*Andrew is sat on his phone while Isaac is sat opposite him filing her nails.*

Andrew

Just heard from Peter and Seb, they have the car. and i didn’t pay a penny for it which is good.

Isaac

I did, i paid like, 400-500 for that car.

Andrew

oh right only you three paid..

Isaac

And how come you don’t have to pay anything?

Andrew

Because i’m the leader,Isaac, i’m the brains, i don’t have to pay for shit.

isaac

you know, you’re so god damn rude sometimes.

Andrew

What do you mean? I happen to think i am incredibly nice to you Isaac, of all people.

*Isaac gives him a dirty look and at that point Seb and Peter walk in*

Andrew

Ahh good you’re here, right lets get started.

*peter walks over to the fridge and gets out a beer*

Seb

but we just got in? can we just sit down for like five minutes and calm down? Peter just told me we stole that car.

Andrew *looking at peter looking surprised*

You stole the car?

Peter

hell yeah!

Jenny

so what about the money i put in?

Andrew

Hold on there, he stole the car i think he earned that money fair and square. Peter you keep it and have a drink on Isaac

*peter looks up and raises his drink*

Andrew

Anyway, back to business. I have devised a complicated plan on how we are going to get the money. it starts with Peter and I going in to the bank, we will go in. Peter, you’re on crowd control and i will get the money from that bitch who wouldn’t give me the blueprints.

Seb

What?

Andrew

Nevermind, just focus!

Now Isaac and seb you will be on lookout and get away driver.

Who’s doing what?

Jenny

Well i want the smallest part possible, so i will be driver?

Andrew

Isaac you can’t even drive, you haven’t even passed your test…

Isaac

So what?! i can still drive!

Andrew

Isaac, I won’t lie to you, you’re the shittest driver I have ever seen. there is noway in hell i’ll let you drive us into a tree while we try and escape.

Seb

Why did you ask us to sort it out between out if you already had it planned out?

Andrew *looking at Seb in silence*

That’s a good point, Seb you will be the get away driver and Isaac, you’ll be just outside the front door, looking for cops and if Peter and I need help we can signal you in quickly.

Isaac

You know what hold on! I didn’t even want a part of this anyway! you’ve forced me into this whole thing, you’ve taken my money and now you’re forcing me to rob a bank! i’ve had enough this has gone too far!

*Andrew pulls jenny aside and quickly says:*

Andrew

Shut up you’ll be getting more money than all of us.

*Isaac then looks down*

Andrew

Right guys, Tomorrow’s the day. lets do this.

  1. INT; INSIDE STOLEN CAR, MIDDAY

Andrew

We all look fucking stupid. what the hell are we wearing?

  • All of them are wearing different outfits. (Andrew in a suit, Seb in a banana suit but also looks kind of like a superhero, Peter in a Jesus costume and Isaac in her own clothes

I thought we agreed on suits

Peter

Fuck you man nobody else wanted suits.

Andrew

But now we just look fucking stupid! We are all wearing different costumes and we look so disorganised!

Seb

So what nobody is going to know it’s us?

Andrew

Shut up Banana boy. you look the most stupid out of all of us. Even more stupid than Jesus over there

Jenny

Stop being so horrible and lets just get this over with.

*they pull up next to the bank*

*The bank has loads of scaffolding around it and looks like it is being shut down*

Andrew

God damn it no…

Peter

What is happening

Jenny

Well it looks like it is being shut down…

Andrew

No, no, no. Why?!

Literally all this planning for nothing!

Seb

*Getting out the car*

Guys you’ll never guess what i just heard on the radio.

Isaac

what?

Seb

Apparently safenet has closed down. yeah it was a mixture of insurance scams, the shitty economy and the fact that there has been a massive increase in robbing safenet banks recently..

Peter

huh…well i thought that we were the only copy cats in this situation. Well done Andrew for thinking of a plan anyone can think of. guess you’re not as smart as you make out.

Andrew

What the hell did you just say to me

Peter

That you’re just as much of a moron as me, or seb, or Isaac.

*they square up to each other and jenny tries to break them up. while this happens Seb walks away and out of shot*

Isaac *after a few second tussle*

Everyone needs to calm down. this whole plan is finished and we are not robbing a bank. that is final it is a stupid idea and we are going to get arrested. also Peter you owe me like £500

Peter

Oh come on dude not now.

Isaac

No. Shut up. you do.

*at this point seb comes running back into shot with a pastic bag fillied with money*

Seb

Come on guys we need to go!

Andrew

Why?

Seb

I just robbed that shop over there! Lets go!

Isaac

What?! why?!

Seb

I thought we wanted money?

Isaac

Well, if you didn’t just run off to rob that shop you would know that we just backed out of the incredibly stupid idea!

Seb

Oh… well should i just return this? i mean we have it now?

Andrew

No you idiot lets go!

*he grabs Jenny and Seb by the shirts and starts to run*

  1. INT; FRONT ROOM: MIDAY

Andrew

Seb i cannot believe you actually pulled through for us!

Now we just have to decide what to do with the money.

Seb

What do you mean? i did literally all the work, other than get away driving and that was jenny, so i say that she gets some of the money..

Peter

Hey! what about how we agreed to cut andrew out!

Andrew

Wait you said you were going to cut me out!? but we agreed we were going to cut those two out! what’s wrong with you man?!

*they all burst into an argument and then suddenly there is a knock at the door.*

*Andrew answers the door and there is a police detective stood there*

Detective Davis

Hello guys, detective John Davis, is that your ford festia parked outside?

Peter

Yeah…

Detective Davis

Well we have received word and photo evidence of a man in a banana suit and a cape robbing a corner shop in exeter high street and leaving in that fiesta outside, anyone know what that is about?

*Everyone looks at the banana suit thrown to the side*

Peter

It was Andrew.

End. ”

With this shot of chris walking through the door, I thought that it was genuinely what i had in mind however I think that when I film it for real I will one make sure the lighting isn’t in the background making everything go black and I will do it more face on so that you can see the characters faces better.

After experimenting with two angles of the paper being placed on the table I think that the second was a lot better than the first. Although it’s still not exactly what I had in mind and I might still do one or two more I think that I could include the shot in my fmp

FMP Production journal

Production journal

Monday  17th feb

Today is the day I start my production for my final piece. However I do not know quite yet what I want to do. I d think that I will probably do a short story as they are what I enjoy doing the most. Right now I am also leaning towards horror as I did a drama last year for my FMP and although I was happy how it turned out I think I might try something new. However I do not know if it will be scary what I have planned and I do not want my FMP to flop and I want to be proud of my last piece of work for Exeter College.

By Wednesday the 19th I am hoping to have decided what I want to do for my final piece

Wednesday the 19th Feb

I am struggling to think of an idea for an FMP. I feel like I am wanting more of a narrative to my short story, however. I feel like I have changed my ideas a bit however, i think i want to do something more comical. I think that i would like to use binary opposite in my FMP maybe even put in todorov theory in there because the two work very well together.

I think tonight i am going to put some real thought into what i am doing and come up with a story or at least an idea by tomorrow.

Thursday the 23rd of Feb.

I decided what i am going to be doing for my final piece. I am going to do a comedy. I do not have a story line yet however i know it will be about a group of friends who all have different mental disorders.

putting some more thought into this was really good because i feel like it will be easier to make a comedy rather than a Horror as i enjoy making people laugh so i think i will have more luck doing that rather than scaring people as i would rather watch a comedy than a horror

tomorrow i will be starting my proposal and trying to develop the story line a bit.

Friday 24th of feb.

Today i worked on the story a bit but did not get far. but i have decided that they are going to all live in a house together. and that the leader of the friends will be very smart and able to convince the others to help him do something. I think he is going to be some sort of sociopath. or something like that. but because i could not get any further i decided to move onto the production schedule and other parts of the proposal.

I am happy with the progress i am making with my project. I still don’t have a story line but over a few days it has changed and developed a lot. I think that over the next few days i am going to try and develop the story a bit more.

Monday the 27th of Feb.

Today i have been working on my production schedule, i think that it went pretty well, i managed to do about half of it done. I think that now i have it mostly planned out that i  am quite happy with how this project is looking and cannot wait to get started. I have also delvoped a story line. The four friends are going to rob a bank and i want it to kind of be in the style of an Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode. this is because i really enjoy how the show runs and the characters. i like these things because the characters are actually terrible people and not to mention complete idiots who always do weird but hilarious  things.

This has really helped me because i now have something in mind to work on and work towards and making a production schedule will really help me because it will help me manage my time and what i am meant to be doing. So hopefully i will keep on target and stick to the schedule

Wednesday the 1st of March

Today i started doing my research, and i manged to get a few good starting points done, the main ones being some mental disorders i researched (OCD and  Schizophrenia) they were really interesting to look at and research. After looking at some i am looking forward to making characters using my research to shape them.

I think this has helped me because i think that with all the different mental disorders it will keep the show and characters interesting. I have also chosen a range of mental disorders because i think that the different characters and their personalities will bounce of each other which will escalate their situation.

Thursday the 2nd of March.

Today I finished off my proposal and i think think that it went quite well and it gave me a good good idea where my project is going.

Now i am going to wait till tomorrow to resent my proposal to Chris to see what he says. I hope that he will like it and doesn’t say i will have to reconsider. Either way it will help me to produce something that will appeal to my target audience

Friday the 3rd of March.

Today i presented my proposal to the class and Chris (my teacher) and i think it went really well. Chris asked me a lot of questions and by the sounds of things did like the sound of my project which i am happy with.

This has helped me because i now know that other people think my project sounds interesting and that nothing for my idea needs to change. next week i will start my research and develop my idea a bit more.

Monday the 6th of March

Today i did some research on my practitioner Rob McElhenney.

I think that I choose a good practitioner to work on because of his sense of humour and i feel like his work has inspired me a bit and i feel like his style of writing in Always sunny has given me a few ideas of my own and i think that i could produce something similar which people would enjoy. i really like his style of writing because it is really unique and interesting to me. and that is the same with the characters and i think that i want to do the same sort of thing with mine as to what he has done with his (make them lovely but horrible idiots)

I think that looking into him was really good because i can see how much he does for Always Sunny. he writes, acts and (some) directing for the show. and after looking at that i realize i am going to have to do the same as well as film it myself. however i will not act as i think that i need to focus on more important things than performance.

Wednesday the 8th of March

Today i had the day off of college but have done a bit of work at home. i have done some research on alcoholism but i do not know if i am going to make a character based on this because from what i have read I think that this is something very serious and it would be difficult to make light of such a dark situation.

however i will continue researching to see if include it because it would be good to mention it as it would be great to raise awareness about something so horrible. i think that this was good research to do as I have learned a lot about alcoholism and how it effects people. so i know how it should be written about and how it should be put into my project.

Thursday the 9th of March

Today i have been looking at Legal and ehtical issues for my research and i found this quote,

“The language surrounding disability used within mainstream media is often still negative. This is especially true regarding hidden impairments, possibly due to a lack of understanding. When dealing with mental and learning disabilities, the media often uses very strong negative language. One example of this (amongst many) was a March 2006 article in The Sun, reporting on a dyslexic postman. The article used the following words “fool”, “barmy” and “struggling”, and included two separate quotes stating that the dyslexic postman “can’t read” and “can’t read properly”, despite the postman himself saying earlier in the article that he can read, but has difficulties with certain combinations of numbers. Ethically, this is quite damaging and has strong implications for dyslexic people. The Sun has a very wide readership, and language such as this presents a false, negative image of dyslexics to a very large number of people.”

(http://www.disabilityplanet.co.uk/social-barriers-and-ethical-issues.html (02/023/17))

what this quote is making very clear to me is that i should not mock the poeple with the dissablities. I think that this was a really good source because i think if nothing is mentioned about their disabilites in a mocking way then i do not really see much of a problem and i do not think other people will either. I think that when shows and arties are insulting to people with disablites that is when people have a problem.

I have also done some research into Dennis Reynolds from Always Sunny and Dexter Morgan from Dexter as their characters really interest me and i think that i want something similar in my short film.

I also think this was good research as i am going to base a character on him as i think Dennis’ is absolutely hilarious and want to base a character off of him as well as Dexter so it was really good to look into what they both had mentally.

Friday the 10th of March

Today i have been looking into equipment for my production and came across the Arri Alexa XT Plus 4:3 Camera. After doing some research into this camera I think it would be good for my production as it literally is the best on the market. With addiontal sense control with so many other futeatures which would benefit my production it would really help improve the quality of my short film.

As much as i want to use this camera i think that i will probably use my own as i would not need to pay for it and it already has good quality, just not as good as this one!

This was good research to do however as i have as i know what sort of quality camera i want but might not get to use seeing as it is like three grand!

I have also been looking at Microphones this morning. The main one being the RODE Microphone GO. I think that this would be a mic that would really help me in my production because in my last projects i have no used one and just used the mic on my camera but if i was to have this mic i feel like my production would be a lot quality so for that reason I think that I am going to buy one.

This was really good research to have as i now know what mic i want to get to film my project and how much it will cost.

And finally on my equipment research i have had a look at the editing software which i plan to use. Final Cut Pro.

I have used it many times before and i know for a fact that it is one of the best editing softwares on the planet. it is simple and easy to use while looking slick and clean. with so many useful features and effects i think that i would have to be stupid to not use Final cut. I really is the best that an editor could ask for.

This was really good research to have as i have looked at other editing software and none of them look anywhere near as good (in my opinion) as final cut and i will already know how to use it as i have used it before so i save time of figuring out how to use the new editing software.

Today i have also looked at different mental disorders such as Alcholism and SPD as well as looking at the rules of the watershed and after looking at these i think that it has really helped me understand what i can put in my film and make it so it can be shown after the watershed. I think that this will help me write my script because i will know what i can and cannot do.

This was really good research to do because it helped me get a better idea of both these mental disorders and how i can put them into my story and script.

Monday the 13th of March.

Today i have done some research into buying anew mic and i think if i can get enough money i am going to go for the RODE Microphone GO because it is the best you can get for under £100.

I have also looked at the demographics for three different shows; Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Inbetweeners and Brooklyn Nine- Nine. and looking at these comedies i can see similar patterns in the demographics. for example they are all left wing (some more than others) and they all have a similar style but focus on similar sorts of things and characters. i think it was really helpful to look at them because it gives ideas and concepts when developing characters and ideas.

Looking at different demographics was really helpful as i now know what sort of target audience i should aim my show at by looking at  similar shows.

Friday the 17th of March.

This work i have worked really hard to finish off my research. And i really think that it has been beneficial to my project and preparing for filming. It has given me ideas on characters and helped me come up with a story line. as well as a style of comedy i want to do.

Doing my research was so helpful to do because it helped me shape my project form everything from filming equipment to the story. It helped my project because i now have a clear idea of what i need to do and how to achieve it. Aswell as not what to do. such as insulting the characters about their mental disabilities

Monday the 20th of March.

After doing my research i am deciding to change my project to a TV series Pilot as i think that the format will suit TV better and i think that if i was to pitch the idea to a production company there are a lot more things i could do with the characters and the style of the show.

Friday the 24th of March.

This week i have managed complete my research and present my pitch to my class.

I think that it went quick well and when i explained it Chris said that my idea has an interesting concept and that he is looking forward to seeing it be completed.

I have also completed my character profiles and done a brief plan of the episode i plan to do. next thing i need to start doing is writing the script.

this stuff all helped me in different ways. the pitch was helpful because it was useful to see what people thought of my idea and to see a group of peoples reaction was really good to see if people where interested or not.

and doing character profiles was so helpful as i now know who all of my characters are, what they wear and what their personalities are. and doing an episode plan was really good as i have a clear idea of how my show is going to go down.

Monday the 27th of March

Today i started to move onto starting my pre production and planning out my TV Pilot.

I have also finished off my character profiles and started doing research into my script writing. I think that this was brilliant research to do because it has given me so many tips to help me write my script and i feel like i am getting ready to start it. I am Looking forward to the things that come.

Monday the 17th of march

I have not made any Journal entries since the start of half term but it is about time i do one now. I have just finished my script and i am very happy with how the episode is going to go. If all goes well i think that i will be very happy with my outcome. my next step will be casting and doing the rest of my preproduction then onto filming.

Doing the script and pre-production was very useful to do because i  know what is happening, when it is happening and where it is happening, because of this i now know when my project will be finished.

Friday the 21st of April.

This week I have been working on preproduction. I have got almost all my casting done and I have also got the filming permission for Thomas Moore so I can film in their shop. This is really good progress and by next Friday I am hoping I will be ready to start filming.

This really helped me as i am getting closer and closer to film so i need to do this as quickly as possible.

Monday the first of may.

Today i finished off casting and and my reece stuff. this was really good to do because i am now ready to start filming and still have a whole month to do that and edit as well. Now my next step is to start filming.

Thursday the 11th of may
Today I finished my filming. It was a long and stressful week of organising people and getting everyone sorted but it was worth it in the end. This means I have two weeks to edit my project and to perfect my work before I finish on the 26th of may. This is really good because it means I’m not rushing trying to get it all done.

It was really helpful to get the filming done within a few days as now i have enough time to edit and get everything in on time.

Friday the 12th of May

Today i started editing my project and i manged to get the first few scenes done. i do not have any transitions between scenes yet though.

I found editing quite fun and enjoyable. Getting the first few scenes done was really good because i got to see how well my filming really went and what would need to be changed with my pilot.

Friday the 19th of May

Today i showed my project to my target audience (18-24 year old males) and i think that it went quite well. there were a few laughs and i got a lot of feedback.

getting feedback about my show was really good as i now know what i would need to fix if i was going to do re shoots and how i could fix some problems i was having. but i was happy with the feed back i got as it was mostly positive and it was good it know people enjoyed it.

Another way this helped me was that because i showed my film to the class (around 15 people) i was able to get a lot of helpful feedback which i used to make my project better. it was also really helpful to get written feedback because that was i could always refer back to it to see where things could be improved such as the audio and some of the lighting and to see what worked within my project such as the writing and my use of shots.

I decided to screen my rough cut in front of my target audience in person so i could see how they would react to it. what made them laugh and what didn’t. This was an effective way to see how well my FMP had done and see if it did match up to the pitch that i made a few months ago. and from the reaction i got it did. there where laughs when jokes where made and i was proud of what i made.

I also think that another way i could of got better feedback would of been to record their reactions so i can see their facial expressions when jokes are made to see how well they work on different people. or maybe as i could of captured it better with a review questionnaire asking about what people thought of the film.

Tuesday 23rd of May

Today i filmed shots for more opening sequence and found the music my theme tune  (this took over an hour) and after i did that i managed to finish off editing.

I think that the editing went really well and i love how my project turned out. although it did have a few problems with a few things, such as some shots and audio. this could easily be fixed with re-shoots. i am going to show the finished project to James tomorrow and hopefully get signed off.

UAL Project Proposal

Before you start your final production you MUST complete a formal Project Proposal. This proposal MUST be word processed and signed off by your teacher before you start the project.

You must use the headings below as a template for your proposal.

Centre Name and Number: Exeter College-84007

Student Name and Number: Harry Squire

Project Proposal Title and Date: (Title Unknown)

Main Pathway/Medium: Comedy

Section One – Rationale

At the start of the year we made corporate videos and I did one for Clip and Climb. I made them a montage of things you can do at clip and climb then we moved onto doing the live TV show and Ted talks. I wrote the script for the TV and was a camera operator in the studio and for my ted talks I did a presentation on the representation of masculinity in action adventure films. I was proud of both the projects I took part in and feel like it is a big improvement on my work last year. I learned a lot about camera work more than anything this year. As well as script writing and how to write a TV show. This has influenced my idea by Making me think about more interesting way to use a camera and trying new shots.

Section TwoProject Concept

The concept of my project is to make a short comedy film. The story so far is narrative comedy about four friends who have different mental disorders who all live in a shared house together. Each character will be very different from one another and will often clash with the each other. I plan to make this film offensive and to shock people by what is said and done. My target audience is ages 18-25.

I will be researching comedy short films which are similar to mine. I will also be researching four different mental disorders which I can base my characters on. I will have to search these things on the internet or get in contacts with experts who specialise in looking at these mental disorders, I can also find some books which study mental health. This will help me develop ideas about my characters and story lines.

I plan to produce a narrative short story about four friends with different mental disorders who all live in the same shared house. But I do not have a story line yet

I plan to use cameras, mics and maybe some Foley sound for sound effects.

I am making this project to put it forward into a short comedy festival because I think it is something that people would enjoy. I feel like the humour I will be using will be different to what people have been before and will really peak interest of my viewers.

Section Three – Evaluation

I will evaluate my work by comparing it to things similar and by setting goals for myself to achieve within the show. I will also be doing a written assessment at the end of the project. Also throughout the project I will be doing a daily journal where I keep people updated from what I have done day to day.

PART 1- 1.Genre

Genre is a way to put different films or styles of music into categories. In films these might include Horror, Action/Adventure etc… The useful thing about genre is that they can be used to appeal to a certain audience. They can do this by including certain things in there films such as characters or story lines.

  1. Narrative

Narrative looks at story and the way it is told. Some narrative theories include – Binary Opposites (Levi-Strauss) and Todorov’s Theory of Equilibrium. Binary opposites are the use of good an evil in a story line which always makes a good narrative to watch the difference in characters and Todorov’s theory is Todorov’s narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This is often used in narrative because it shows the progression of a story.

  1. Representation

The way certain people or characters are represented in the media. You might look at Gender or ethnicity for instance and ask why they might be represented differently in different media products. If you looked at ethnicity you might look at films aimed at a black audience and compare them to films aimed at a mainstream (possibly white) audience. Then you could see if there are any differences in the way characters are represented and ask why.

  1. Audience

If I looked at audience I would focus on things related to target audiences (these include gender, age range, ethnicity, earnings/job, religion, interests etc…) when you look at audiences you can ask why certain people might be attracted to different media products. Another main area of audience looks at ABCs. This means the different social classes people are in because of their jobs and wealth.

  1. Regulation

This is what is allowed for certain media products. It looks at the law and how audiences are protected. Regulation of Films is managed by BBFC. Advertising regulation is managed by ASA and Pegi manages Video games think regulation is actually a good idea. I think that it protects people from seeing things that they might not enjoy. However I do think that if you choose to watch these things then the BBFC should not be able to stop you.

  1. Technology (including digital media)

Technology is what is used to access the media. Such as an iPhone, a PlayStation or there is digital media such as YouTube or Netflix. These things can be both good and bad for the media. It is good because you can use them to promote a product/film. However they can be bad because it is now so easy to illegally watch and download a films and music and then the production company do not get any money. This is slowly killing the industry because it means that production companies do not get the money the deserve for making their product.

  1. Production/Distribution/Exhibition

This is the different stage of production. Production obviously being making the product. Distribution is how a product is shown to an audience. This might be things like DVDs or A streaming website. And exhibition is something like the cinema in the film industry.

  1. Marketing and Promotion

Marketing and promotion is what is used to distribute things in the media such as movies. Using adverts can do this by trying to appeal to their target audience on things like TV and YouTube as well as other ways. Promotion is also things like an article in a news paper. This is another helpful way to ‘promote’ a product although this can be used to also do the opposite.

part 2

i think that out of all the things i can choose from to make a ted talks about i want to study the representation of something in film.

For example looking at the way women are represneted in horror films would be intersting because normally they are represented as ‘sluts’ or party animals but that is not often the case. but we will have to see.

i have decided to do my ted talks on, The representation of men in action adventure films. this is because i think there is a lot to study and look at here and the conclusion might will be very interesting.

Abstract-

My topic is a The representation of men in action adventure films this interests me because in action adventure films men are often represented as heroic when they are the lead role but I feel most of the time this isn’t true so I would like to look into why this happens in action adventure films. I plan to do a lot of web searches to find my researches this would mean I would use things like Google books, YouTube and other ted talks. If I’m honest I think that this research will lead me back to the times were males were heroic and used to hunt animals for their tribe or camp and how all men should be able to provide for there inferiors or people who in their eyes, couldn’t provide for the tribe (children and maybe women too)

after doing some research and putting it into a annotated catalog i have been able to write a script. here is all my research and my annotated catalog followed by my script and power point presentation.

10th December- BBC News and Regional news

17th December- Eat Well for Less

25th December- Would i Lie To You?

31st December- Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot

After looking at all the shows which are on at 20:00 on a Thursday I can see that they are mainly PG or shows you would watch with your family. such as children in need this would be aimed at most people but mainly families and people with kids. It is also aimed at people who give to charity to help the children in need. But there is also reality shows like Traffic Cops or Masterchef, or DYI SOS I think these sorts of shows are aimed at older people. I think this because not many younger people are interested in watching homes being re-done. However Younger people might be interested in things like traffic cops because it teaches them right from wrong and what they shouldn’t do.

Audience Profile

I think that this time slot (BBC ONE at 20:00) is used to appeal to quite a lot of audiences of both genders. This is because it appeals women because it plays shows like Miranda and Eat well for less because i think that this is who these shows are aimed at. but then on the other hand this time slot also appeals to men because it plays things like Watch Dogs or Traffic cops. I however think that the age range of people watching would be slightly older. sort of age 18-30 so working age of the working class. I also think that this time slot might be trying to appeal to the Succeeder in the Psycho-graphic profile . think this because in shows like master chef and Miranda where they go to make the best food or in DIY SOS where they massively improve someones house and living condition. I However do not think that sexuality has anything to do with the target audience of this channel however. i think that the main they use to appeal to target audience is Age and Class which does help appeal to quite a big target audience.

PART 2-Two ideas for a TV show:

1.The first idea is a TV show which is based on reviews of things like TV shows, video games, and gadgets. There will be one host in the studio who sits with four other people. The other four will be split into teams and those teams have to argue which is better or why they don’t like a product. for example the iPhone 7. they would say why they like it or dislike it and whichever team makes the better argument wins a point for the round and moves onto the next topic. it would air on channel five at around the same time as the gadget show ( 19:00) The target audience will be more than likely teenagers as they have the biggest interest in films and gadgets exc. We will appeal to the target audience by having younger people present the show and people who they know such as celebrities or someone who has something to do with gadgets or film production. The show will be in a studio. I would probably want there to be a tv in there which can have things like trailers exc played on it. the host and players would either be sat at desks or on sofas. The colour scheme would probably be gender neutral to appeal to both genders to bring in a bigger target audience

I think this show will appeal to the target audience because it talks about things that the target audience would be interested in. especially the teens who have an interest in technology. This is because it gives factual information as well as making their opinions into a game by giving more valid points. I also think that the show is on at a good time because most people are home buy this time so more people will be likely to watch it. I also think that this show appeals to both genders but maybe slightly more male as they tend to have a bigger interest in technology. I also think that this show appeals to the Succeeder Psycho-graphic because  it makes arguments on what the best technology is which a succeeder would want in their lives. This show also does not appeal to sexuality and mainly appeals to people who have an interest in technology

2. My second idea is For a show based on recent news. It would air just after the ten o’clock news and would basically consist of a host who gives a brief of a new topic then interviews a range of people which differ from, race, ethnicity but all of a similar age and he lets them give their opinion on the news which has just aired. The target audience would mainly be for ages 45+ because they are more likely to watch the news.  I think we will appeal to the target audience by using neutral colours, formal language and set design, such as a desk for the host. With a sofa which faces said desk. The dress code will be quite formal such as wearing a shirt.

I think this show would appeal to the target audience by using the a lot of things. the first one being age. by using an age range the same as the target audience you can make people relate to what they see and because of this what the show. it can also bring in a bigger audience by using ethnicity so it also appeals to a bigger target audience because of this. I think that however this show would appeal to more of an explorer or the apirer Psycho-graphic because it mainly relates to the news and other people opinions of it.

PART 3-

For our TV show mike was promoted to the Producer role and we came up with a show which was eventually called screen watch. The point of the show was to promote new techs and games which had been recently released to the public. The show would appeal the age range 16-25 as this age would be the most likely to have an interest in technology. it would appeal to them by having presenters who are of that age range and they would also be male to appeal to the target audience more because males also have a bigger interest in technology as well. I think that the class would be Around C because it would be aimed at people who had slightly more money. This show also appealed to people who value technology more than most other things.

here is my original script for our TV Show, ScreenWatch

script-for-live-tv-show

I think that we met the audience’s needs quite well overall. I think that the set and presenters where professional and formal so it was easier to understand. It also gave information which was helpful to the audience and helped advertise the product that was being shown. However, I did feel the way it was presented was very dull and boring as you just watched people talk about something and did not see much else.

I feel like I had a fair bit of involvement in the show overall. In the preproduction I did a lot of work, mainly writing the original draft for the script, which took me quite a while to do. I also came up with the title for the show. Screen Watch. Then in the production I operated camera two in the TV studio and did the opening panning shot and the establishing shot for the rest of the show. I did actually enjoy working in this team, however I feel like overall we did not rehearse nearly enough as what we should of done as the script was not rehearsed nearly as much as what it could have been. I did actually really enjoy working on live TV as stressful as it was, as I feel like it really helped me develop skills that I did not have before and will benefit of them in the near future . I think that I did a good job of helping producers come up with something appealing to a specific target audience. The show appealed to the target audience because it put across information that they might have been interested to know. It was also presented in a informal way so it would appeal to our viewers.  However They were difficult to make appealing when the presenters did not have much practice . I think that the presenters worked well together however i would of made them have more practice before actually going into the studio.

I think this sounds amazing and like a real opportunity to learn more and really home my skills as a film maker. Screen shot 2016-10-13 at 09.31.52.pngScreen Shot 2016-11-03 at 10.15.14.pngScreen Shot 2016-11-03 at 10.14.55.png

I have now applied for work experience for south west productions to see if I can learn more about corporate videos.

Other than media I have thought about one or two jobs. One of them was I was thinking about running a restraint which specialises in making things like toasties and  ommlets. sort of like a snack bar but it was only an idea and I have not done any research into how to do that.

I think that my progress on progressions went really well, I looked at a lot of different things that I would be interested in, such as work experience with sky. Another example of this is that I am planning on trying to get work experience with a local corporate video company to gain experience doing that. If it goes well I might even try and start my own corporate film company and see how well that goes. If I however decide that I do not like doing that then I will try and look for work on a TV production team. Or get an apprenticeship with them.

I was looking at more work stuff rather than university however because I don’t think university would be very suited for me. This is because I Struggle to concentrate for long periods of time so I think that paying £9000 a year for lessons I will hardly listen to will be a waste of money. But maybe after a few years I will change my mind and I will go and do a course in media production because that was what I was looking at on Ucas. Some of the courses seemed interesting however I don’t think that university is that suited for me. That is why I looked and more apprentice and job work because I think that it would be best for me to actually be better for me to be working with a camera on a set or something. I really feel this would be the best way for me to learn and develop in media as it is what I love doing but, if I change my mind I a few years then I will go to university and see how that goes but for now I do not feel like that is the right path to choose for me. I am actually quite happy with my decision to do this.

I don’t know how well I used my communication skills however because I was waiting until college had finished before I try and get a job in the media industry. This is because I think that if I had work experience now or during term time then I would get very behind on course work which I feel right now is more important. So this is why I am waiting until summer or near to summer to get it sorted so I am not doing more than two things and once and fall behind on course work because I know I would have a hard time catching up.

If I am honest I think that I know what I am doing with future. I have big plans and ambitions and I think that I have the skills needed to achieve them. I am looking forward to my life after college and education. I think that is going to be a real chance for me to prove myself in the media industry and to do something I am actually passionate about.

corporate video work.

For this unit I have been asked to make a corporate video for a client of my choice. A corporate video is a promotional video for a company where it shows everything that happens inside the company as a way to promote business

Fitzgerald’s Bicycles Shop Video

[2]

This corporate video is for a bike shop based in Idaho named Fitzgerald’s Bicycles it is an independent business which sells bikes and works as a social hub for the community. it is also has many other features such as J. peter Bray who works on special fittings on your bike for you. Everything you needed to see in the shop was shown in the video and was very informative about their imagine and what they shop meant to them and the vibe they wanted to send to customers (welcoming, Professional, Friendly).

The video was filmed extremely well using so many things. Such had drones to get a nice shot of the top of the shop. lots of shots of people on bikes, as well as interviews with the owners and workers. also showing many different parts of the shop and cafe. Also the music was also very upbeat and happy which added to the friendly vibes the shop gives off.

Firstly, I am Analysing the Microsoft corporate video.

This corporate video is extremely effective because it is filmed smartly and is a very tidy edited piece. It is appealing to the audience because people that will be involved in Microsoft explorations will see this and think wow it is inspirational due to the music this will show them that the whole company of Microsoft is inspirational and inspires people to do more and create more. The actual filming of the video is shot very smartly almost interview like and gives the feeling that the Microsoft company is quite formal and a proper company. The almost interview like talking during the video shows us that it means something and the building of the Microsoft sign is a very important step for the companies future. Its actually quite a sneaky video because the way they have done it is that they have made out that there just talking about the sign but in doing so they have shown of there entire Microsoft company and showed how much work is put into the company.

[3]

Secondly, I am analysing the Brentford Leisure Centre Corporate Video.

This corporate video is not that good in my opinion. It manly consist of the same shots but filmed differently. The music is pretty plain and simple and there is no talking that gives us a real sense of what the leisure centres purpose is or what they are trying to achieve. it does not appeal to there target audience because the main audience for people that go to leisure centres are older women and men and they aren’t being told what activity there are to offer or the price even the opening times. This should all be included because older people prefer to be informed rather then just shown what the leisure centre looks like.

Proof that I emailed Raceworld and asked them for a corporate video.

This was Race-worlds reply to my E-mail. Although they were not looking for a new film to be mad as they had literally just finished filming yesterday, these things happen and we need to continue looking for a new client.

Evaluation- james responce to corporate video.jpg

My client never responded to my email but when I had my response from James. He was happy with the work I had done but had one bad point about it which was it didn’t mention about bookings which is a fair point and is something I could change to make my video better. I think that my video did fit the purpose of what it was made for (to sell clip and climb) it showed the everything that was interesting and exciting  and made clip and climb look as good and as fun as I could. However they never responded to my email with the link of the video, so I don’t think they plan on using it for their business.

I think that my conduct with the client was pofessional as it needed it be, for example i gave them advise on what would look better in a video and they listened to me and changed some of their ideas. I did enjoying working freelance because it basically showed me how I would manage my time on my own exc. I also enjoyed having to work with clip and climb even though they didn’t respond and they were easy to work with. I think that I would consider working on corporate videos professionally as I did find the work fun, interesting and quite easy.

Overall I was very proud of myself for the video that I had made. In a way it was scary approaching someone you didn’t know and asked them to make a video but I really enjoyed the experience. I feel like I did my job really well even though I never got a response from my client james said that it was very good but i take his critisim on board of that there was nothing mentioned on booking but overall I am proud of the work I have done and wouldn’t mind doing this professionally in the future perhaps.
